Frequently Asked Questions

 

Q. When is my payment due?
A. The chess club fee is due the First meeting day in September and due again the First meeting day in January.

Q. Who do I make the check payable to?
A. Please make all checks payable to Atlanta Chess School (or) ACS.

Q. Does a parent need to be present for an entire tournament?
A. Yes! Someone needs to monitor your child during the tournament. Some parents carpool and switch out on all day tournaments so that they can still have time for other things.

Q. What chess books do you recommend for my child?
A. We recommend only workbooks that emphasize tactics and endgame practice.

Q. Do you teach chess Openings?
A. We teach the Opening Principles that are related to all chess openings. The “Giouco Piano” or Italian Game and the Scotch Game are generally used and others used as needed.

Q. What software do you recommend for my child?
A. “Chessmaster 7000” and above and “Chess Tactics for Beginners.”

Q. How do you monitor my child’s progress?
A. We utilize various software programs in our chess clubs that track each student’s progress. We also use “Level Cards” that are very instrumental in motivating children to study chess above and beyond our classroom teaching.
